MATES Big Lap 2025: "Move for your MATES" – Rallying Australia for Suicide Prevention and Mental Health

Running for the month of April, this year’s theme, "Move for your MATES," called on Australians to come together, get active, and raise vital awareness for suicide prevention and mental health across the Construction, Mining, Energy, and Manufacturing sectors.

Physical activity and movement are powerful tools for mental health and overall well-being. Regular exercise helps reduce stress, boost mood, and foster a sense of connection and purpose—key factors in maintaining mental resilience. Research has shown that as little as 10 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise can contribute to the prevention of mental ill-health, including depression and anxiety. Furthermore, 16 weeks of regular exercise has been found to be equally as effective as antidepressant medication for mild to moderate depression (ESSA, 2021). Whether it's walking, running, wheeling, rowing, or swimming, every activity taken is not just a move towards better physical health but a stride towards breaking the stigma around mental health and supporting our mates.

In 2025, teams were at the heart of the event. Anyone participating as part of a team of 5 or more received a bonus free water bottle and hydration packs (thanks to TruWorkwear/Body Armour) to help stay hydrated while moving for a cause that matters.

The sobering reality is that male construction workers are twice as likely to die by suicide compared to other Australian men. Even more concerning, they are eight times more likely to die by suicide than from a workplace accident. These statistics highlight the urgent need for targeted mental health support and suicide prevention initiatives within the construction industry.

Training Events

Our training events equip workers with the skills to recognise warning signs of mental ill-health and suicide, and to take safe, practical steps to offer support. Through sessions like General Awareness Talks (GAT), Connector and ASIST, participants learn how to build a stronger, more connected workplace where help-seeking is normalised and stigma is reduced.

Host a Fundraising Event

Hosting a MATES fundraising event is a powerful way to support suicide prevention and mental health in the construction industry. Whether it's a BBQ, fun run, raffle, or community challenge, these events raise vital funds while bringing people together to start conversations, reduce stigma, and show that we’re stronger together. Every dollar raised helps MATES deliver life-saving training and on-site support across worksites and industries.
