It's Tough to Talk
Real Stories. Real Mates. Real Impact.
Across worksites and industries, MATES-trained workers are stepping up for each other when it matters most. These are their stories — honest conversations about tough moments, real experiences on site, and how MATES training and mental health support are saving lives through suicide prevention in Australia.
Each story is a reminder that when we look out for our mates, recognise the signs, and start the chat, we change lives — and we help build a stronger, safer industry for everyone.
Aaron speaks of his experiences on site, noticing the signs of workmates that led him to ask how they were doing.
Lex talks about putting his ASIST Training into action when a workmate makes a call to him.
Briony talks about an incident at work that through her approach, led to a workmate gaining support.
Michael shares why mental health and suicide prevention are essential on today’s worksites.
How you can be involved
The MATES community is creating a network of people across the construction and allied industries who look out for one another and offer support when it’s needed most. This community-based approach reaches beyond the workplace, helping to build stronger, more connected lives both on and off site.
